Traders at Nakawa Market have rejected the reported government takeover of the facility, demanding compensation for their investments in stalls and market infrastructure before any handover or eviction.
Led by their chairman, George William Bunjo, the traders petitioned Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga at City Hall following a communication from Kampala Resident City Commissioner Umar Lule Mawiya informing them of the government takeover.
The traders say they entered an agreement with the then Kampala City Council in 1995 to develop the market using their own money after the council reportedly cited financial constraints.
They began constructing individual stalls in 2000, with some using personal savings and bank loans.Bunjo insists that traders should not lose their investments without compensation, warning that they will not surrender the facility until their concerns are addressed.
Responding to the petition, Balimwezo acknowledged longstanding disputes over market ownership and management in Kampala. He pledged to support the traders’ compensation demand and push for the matter to be considered in the 2026/2027 budget.
