Former government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo has advised Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba to seek the love and respect of Ugandans rather than becoming a leader people fear.
Opondo made the remarks in an opinion piece discussing Gen Kahinda Otafiire’s recent intervention in Parliament and broader concerns about Uganda’s political and security environment. He urged Muhoozi to address concerns surrounding his reported involvement in partisan politics while serving as an active-duty military officer, warning that such issues could affect his reputation, the image of the UPDF and the government.
Opondo also called on Muhoozi to restrain supporters of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) from engaging in intolerance or aggressive behaviour, saying political movements should not deepen divisions among Ugandans. His central message was clear: Muhoozi should work to be voluntarily liked and respected rather than feared, while controlling individuals who may be acting aggressively in his name.
