The recent public clash between Minister of Water and Environment Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire and Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has revived memories of a dramatic incident involving Muhoozi’s late mother-in-law, Jennifer Kuteesa.
Historical accounts indicate that in October 1988, Otafiire was involved in an argument with Jennifer Kuteesa, the wife of former Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kuteesa and mother of Charlotte Kuteesa, who later married Muhoozi in 1999. During the confrontation in Kampala, Otafiire reportedly drew a pistol.The incident reportedly led to Otafiire resigning from Cabinet the following month.
Then-President Yoweri Museveni accepted the resignation, stressing that the NRM government would not tolerate indiscipline regardless of a person’s position.Otafiire later returned to government and continued to hold senior positions. Nearly four decades later, the old incident has resurfaced as his latest public disagreement with Muhoozi brings their family history back into the spotlight.
