Members of the Babiito clan in Tooro have reportedly called for King Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I to take a second wife as plans emerge for a new royal palace in Kitagwenda.
According to Babiito spokesperson Moses Musinguzi, Kitagwenda officials offered land to the king for a new palace during a recent meeting, a proposal he said the Omukama welcomed.
Musinguzi said the palace would give the king a residence when visiting Kitagwenda and neighbouring Kibaale while carrying out his royal duties.
He also linked the proposal to the clan’s belief that Tooro tradition allows a Mubiito, including the Omukama, to have multiple wives, with previous kings having queens in different royal residences.
However, King Nyabongo I has not publicly announced plans to marry another wife. The call comes shortly after his September 29, 2026 coronation, where Rwenzori Bishop Reuben Bizarwenda Kisembo urged him to honour his Christian marriage vows to Queen Rebecca Amoding.
The Babiito have recognised Rebecca as Queen, while debate continues over cultural succession requirements and the eligibility of children born to mothers outside recognised Tooro clans to inherit the throne.
