A 22-year-old Senior Four student has drowned in Lake Bunyonyi, Rubanda District, while attempting to swim from Itambira Island to Bwama Island.
The deceased has been identified as Samuel Amanya, a student at Lake Bunyonyi Senior Secondary School-Bwama. Police said the incident occurred on October 3, 2026, at around 11am between Itambira and Bwama landing sites.
According to Kigezi Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime, Amanya had paddled a canoe to Itambira Island but later found it missing when he wanted to return to Bwama.
He reportedly decided to swim across the lake but drowned midway.Police Marine officers, assisted by local divers, recovered his body from the lake.

Police have opened investigations, while Tumushime urged parents, schools and communities to discourage learners from swimming in deep waters without proper supervision and safety equipment such as life jackets.
