A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of three Ugandans and left eight others seriously injured along the Kampala-Gulu Highway.
The heartbreaking incident occurred late in the night on March 20, 2026, sending shockwaves through the local community and beyond.
The fatal crash took place at around 11:30 PM in Nkonde Village, located in Nyimbwa Sub-County within Luwero District.
This particular stretch of road is known for heavy traffic, especially at night, making it a high-risk area for accidents.
According to preliminary reports, the collision involved a white Toyota Hiace passenger vehicle and a Tata lorry. Both vehicles were traveling in opposite directions at the time of the accident.
The Toyota Hiace was reportedly transporting passengers from Kampala to Amolatar District. It was carrying several male passengers who were on a routine journey before the tragedy struck.
On the other hand, the Tata lorry was loaded with poles and was heading toward Kampala from Luwero. The vehicle was part of a line of traffic moving along the highway.

Eyewitness accounts and initial findings suggest that the lorry driver attempted to overtake a long queue of vehicles. This maneuver, though common on busy highways, can be extremely dangerous when not executed carefully.
During the overtaking attempt, the lorry moved into the path of oncoming traffic. Unfortunately, this placed it directly in the way of the Toyota Hiace, which had little time or space to react.
The result was a devastating head-on collision. The impact was severe, causing significant damage to both vehicles and leading to immediate casualties.
Three male passengers in the Toyota Hiace lost their lives instantly at the scene. Their deaths were confirmed shortly after the crash, leaving families and communities in deep mourning.
The remaining eight passengers in the Hiace sustained injuries of varying severity. Some suffered critical wounds, while others had moderate injuries requiring urgent medical attention.
Emergency responders acted quickly to rescue the injured victims. They were transported to nearby medical facilities, including Mulago Hospital and Kasana Luwero Hospital.
Medical teams at both hospitals worked tirelessly to stabilize the injured. Efforts were focused on providing immediate care to prevent further loss of life.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were taken to Luwero Hospital Mortuary. Postmortem examinations are expected to be conducted as part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities have since launched an official inquiry into the cause of the accident. Police are working to gather more details and determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the crash.
Investigators are particularly focusing on the overtaking maneuver by the lorry driver. Reckless overtaking is often cited as a leading cause of highway accidents.
This tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with night travel. Reduced visibility and driver fatigue can significantly increase the risk of collisions.
Road safety experts continue to urge drivers to exercise caution, especially on busy highways like the Kampala-Gulu route. Observing traffic rules can help prevent such devastating outcomes.
The public has also been reminded of the importance of patience while driving. Risky decisions, such as unsafe overtaking, can have irreversible consequences.
Families of the victims are now left grieving the sudden loss of their loved ones. The emotional impact of such tragedies extends far beyond the accident scene.
As investigations continue, authorities hope that lessons will be learned from this heartbreaking event. Greater awareness and responsible driving remain key to reducing road accidents and saving lives.
