Former presidential candidate and National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED) leader Joseph Kabuleta has predicted that President Yoweri Museveni and his son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, will no longer be in power by June 2027, while suggesting that major political developments could begin as early as January 2027.
Speaking on The Morning After, a podcast hosted by journalist Edris Kiggundu, Kabuleta urged Ugandans to stop focusing on the 2031 presidential elections, arguing that the country’s political situation could change before then.
“In 2031, the year they’re talking about, first of all I’m telling Ugandans, do not start thinking about 2031. This regime is coming to an end,” Kabuleta said, according to the report.

The NEED leader maintained that Museveni and Muhoozi would not remain in power by June 2027. He also revised his earlier timeline, suggesting that the political changes he anticipates could begin in January next year.
“I said that by June 2027, the Museveni dynasty will be gone but now I wish to revise a bit. By January 2027… I’m telling you this… So it’s getting closer. I’m even pulling it closer than the June I said,” Kabuleta reportedly stated.
Kabuleta did not explain what specific events would lead to the changes he predicts, identify who would replace Museveni or provide evidence showing how his forecast would unfold. His remarks nevertheless add to the ongoing debate about Uganda’s political future and the question of succession.
The former presidential candidate has repeatedly challenged the possibility of Muhoozi succeeding his father, arguing that Uganda’s next political transition should not be viewed as an automatic transfer of power within the same family. His latest remarks reinforce his position that the country’s political direction could change before the next scheduled presidential election.
Museveni has governed Uganda since 1986, while Muhoozi, the Chief of Defence Forces, remains a prominent figure in discussions about the country’s future leadership. However, Kabuleta’s January and June 2027 timelines remain political predictions, not confirmed dates for a change of government.
