NUP spokesperson and Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi has challenged President Yoweri Museveni’s government to explain why it fears political opponents if it considers itself a genuine freedom fighter.
Speaking at the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters in Kavule, Kampala, Ssenyonyi said true freedom fighters should tolerate criticism, opposing views and political competition.
“If you say you’re a freedom fighter, true freedom fighters are always okay with somebody opposing you. If you don’t accept criticism, you are fake freedom fighters,” he said.Ssenyonyi was speaking during an event to welcome back political prisoners, including NUP Deputy President for Buganda Muwanga Kivumbi, who had secured bail after months in detention.
He said opposition politicians should not be treated as enemies simply because they challenge government decisions, adding that NUP is committed to pursuing political change through lawful means.“We are a political party. We follow the law. We are not going to pick guns and go to the bush,” Ssenyonyi said.
