A tragic accident occurred earlier today on the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway, resulting in the deaths of three family members. The accident, which took place on the Mpala section of the Expressway, has left the local community in mourning.
The crash occurred as the vehicle, traveling from Masaka towards Entebbe International Airport, veered off the road and collided with an unknown object after the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, and initial reports indicate that the driver of the vehicle, who was a family member, suffered from extreme fatigue due to a long-distance journey. It is believed that the driver fell asleep behind the wheel while on the highway, leading to the unfortunate crash. The vehicle was carrying several family members, and according to Kampala–Entebbe Expressway authorities, three of the occupants lost their lives instantly.
The Uganda National Road Authority (UNRA) and the Uganda Police Force responded promptly to the scene. The first responders, who included the Expressway’s Incident Response team, worked swiftly to secure the crash site, manage the ongoing traffic situation, and assist with the investigation. The bodies of the deceased were later transported to the City Mortuary for postmortem examinations, while the surviving passenger, who sustained injuries, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The authorities confirmed that the injuries sustained by the surviving passenger were serious but not life-threatening.
The incident occurred along the busy stretch of the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway, which connects the capital city, Kampala, with Entebbe, home to Entebbe International Airport. This highway is one of the busiest in Uganda, and it plays a key role in facilitating both local and international travel. The Expressway also serves as a vital route for business and tourism, with traffic constantly moving in both directions.
Authorities expressed their deep condolences to the families of the victims and offered support to the injured survivor. In a statement, Kampala–Entebbe Expressway management expressed its sympathy, stating, “We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
This statement was shared on their official social media pages, where the team also thanked the Uganda Police for their swift intervention and praised the professionalism of the emergency response teams who assisted at the scene.

The crash is suspected to have been caused by driver fatigue, a common yet often overlooked risk factor on long journeys. Long-distance drivers are known to face the danger of fatigue setting in, which leads to reduced reaction times, blurred vision, and an inability to make quick decisions.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of how fatigue can impair a driver’s ability to stay alert, making it a dangerous risk to both the driver and other road users.
In response to the accident, Allan Ssempebwa, a communications officer at the Ministry of Works and Transport, confirmed the incident and described the situation in a brief statement: “Yes. A road crash has been reported this morning along the Mpala–Kajjansi section of the Expressway involving one vehicle.” He added that preliminary reports indicate fatalities while some occupants sustained injuries.
He also shared that finer details were still being investigated by the Uganda Police and Kampala–Entebbe Expressway Incident Response teams, who were still on-site managing the aftermath of the crash.
Authorities have used the unfortunate event as an opportunity to warn motorists about the dangers of driving while fatigued.
The Uganda Police Force and UNRA are calling for all drivers to take necessary precautions before embarking on long-distance journeys.
They advised motorists to take regular breaks, rest, and get enough sleep before traveling long hours. Moreover, drivers have been reminded to adhere to the speed limits on highways to reduce the likelihood of accidents, especially when fatigue sets in.
The police also urged drivers to avoid driving during late hours when they are more likely to feel drowsy, and they emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and focused on the road.
Drivers who feel tired are encouraged to pull over safely and take a break or find a place to rest before continuing their journey.
Public awareness about road safety continues to be a priority for the authorities, particularly with the rising number of accidents on the nation’s highways.
A local resident, who witnessed the aftermath of the accident, described the scene as “heartbreaking” and said the accident served as a reminder to always prioritize safety while driving. “It is tragic, especially knowing that something as avoidable as fatigue was the cause. We must all do better on the roads,” he said.
The family involved in this tragic accident had been traveling to Entebbe International Airport, likely for personal or business reasons, as they were traveling from Masaka, a town located about 120 kilometers southwest of the capital.
The Entebbe Expressway, which is considered a major route for airport access, connects several parts of the country to the main international gateway.

Given its significance, the Expressway sees a high volume of traffic each day, with travelers from across Uganda and beyond relying on it for safe and timely access to the airport.
The Kampala–Entebbe Expressway itself is a modern, well-maintained road, but like all highways, it comes with inherent risks. Authorities have called for continued investment in public education campaigns focused on road safety, fatigue awareness, and the importance of vehicle maintenance.
The growing number of incidents involving drowsy driving has led to greater emphasis on introducing stricter regulations, including mandatory rest periods for drivers of commercial vehicles.
This accident serves as a sobering reminder of the critical need for road safety measures and for drivers to remain alert, take responsibility for their actions behind the wheel, and exercise caution at all times.
The tragic loss of three lives today, as well as the severe injuries suffered by another, has highlighted the reality that even the most well-designed roads cannot eliminate human error and negligence.
As the investigation continues, it is hoped that the lessons learned from this devastating crash will lead to stronger safety measures and heightened awareness around the risks of fatigue and reckless driving.
The authorities will likely continue pushing for more effective campaigns to reduce fatalities and make Uganda’s roads safer for all users.
