Residents of Bugweri District were left in shock after a police operation against suspected criminal gangs turned violent. The incident has raised fresh concerns about rising crime and the dangers faced by law enforcement officers.
The operation was carried out by security teams targeting groups known locally as the Fangone Forest and Gaza gangs. These groups have been linked to robberies, phone snatching, and other criminal activities in the area.
According to police, the operation was intelligence-led. Officers had gathered information about the suspects and planned a coordinated raid to capture them.
The exercise began at midnight and continued until about 5:30 in the morning. It covered several areas, including Idudi A, Idudi B, and Idudi C.
By the end of the operation, 18 suspects had been arrested. Police described the operation as largely successful, although it was not without serious challenges.
Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson, Michael Kasadha, provided details about what happened during the arrests. He explained that one of the suspects became extremely violent.
The suspect was identified as Mulondo Jamada. During the arrest, he reportedly grabbed a panga and attempted to attack the Officer Commanding (OC) of Bugweri.

The OC, Robert Nagolo, was leading the operation at the time. Officers quickly moved in to control the situation and prevent further danger.
Despite being subdued, the suspect continued to resist. During the struggle, he attacked the officer in a shocking manner, causing serious injury.
Police confirmed that part of the officer’s left ear was bitten during the scuffle. The incident has drawn strong reactions due to its unusual and disturbing nature.
As a result, the suspect has been charged with attempted murder. Authorities say the attack could have caused even more serious harm if it had not been quickly contained.
The injured officer received medical attention following the incident. His condition has not been described as life-threatening, but the injury has been taken very seriously.
In addition to this case, other arrests during the operation revealed further crimes. Two suspects were found in situations involving underage girls.
The suspects, identified as Kaziba Salim and Muwaya Twahili, were arrested and charged with defilement. The victims, aged 17 and 13, were rescued by authorities.

The rescued juveniles were taken for medical examination and are now receiving care. Police have emphasized the importance of protecting children from such harmful situations.
During the raid, officers also recovered several items believed to be linked to criminal activity. These included suspected stolen smartphones and a television set.
Other items, such as flags associated with the gangs, were also found. These materials may help investigators understand how the groups operate.
Police say investigations are still ongoing. They are working to identify more suspects and uncover the full extent of the criminal networks.
The incident highlights the risks that police officers face when dealing with dangerous individuals. It also shows the level of resistance that can occur during such operations.
At the same time, it reflects the broader challenge of tackling crime in growing communities. Authorities are under pressure to improve safety and restore public confidence.
As the situation develops, residents of Bugweri and surrounding areas are hoping for stronger security measures. The recent events serve as a reminder of the need for vigilance, cooperation, and justice.
