President Yoweri Museveni has officiated at the commencement of works for the construction of Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District, describing the project as a major milestone in the transformation of Karamoja and Uganda’s aviation sector.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Museveni reminded wananchi that Karamoja has come a long way from the days of insecurity, cattle rustling, and lawlessness. He noted that the restoration of peace and stability in the region has laid a strong foundation for development and investment.
“The airport will improve access to Kidepo Valley National Park, boost tourism, attract investors, create jobs for our young people and expand markets for local products,” Museveni said. He revealed that more than 1,600 Ugandans are already employed on the project, highlighting its immediate contribution to job creation and economic growth.
The President also thanked partners from the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the United Arab Emirates for investing in the project and recognizing the vast opportunities that Uganda and Africa offer. In her remarks, the Acting Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), Ms. Olive Birungi Lumonya, described Kidepo International Airport as a strategic investment that will strengthen Uganda’s aviation industry and support the country’s long-term development agenda under Vision 2040 and the National Development Plans.
She thanked President Museveni for his continued support towards the development of Uganda’s aviation infrastructure and noted that the airport project is expected to improve connectivity, facilitate tourism, promote trade, and stimulate regional development.
According to Lumonya, UCAA worked closely with the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Uganda Wildlife Authority, Karenga District Local Government, and other stakeholders to identify and assess a suitable site for the airport. Extensive technical studies confirmed that the selected location offers the best balance between operational efficiency, aviation safety, environmental sustainability, and future expansion requirements.
The airport has been planned as a Code 4E international airport with provision for future expansion to Code 4F standards. It will feature a 3,000-metre runway measuring 60 metres in width, including runway shoulders on both sides. Upon completion, the airport will be capable of handling large modern aircraft, including Boeing 777 and Boeing 747 variants, Airbus A330, A340, A350 aircraft, and other regional and international aircraft.
Lumonya further revealed that detailed surveys, feasibility studies, environmental and social impact assessments, master planning, engineering designs, and regulatory reviews have already been completed in accordance with Uganda’s civil aviation requirements.
She emphasized that the project is more than the construction of an airport. Rather, it is a gateway to economic opportunity, tourism growth, regional integration, and improved accessibility for the people of Karamoja and neighboring regions.
The UCAA Acting Director General also commended the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, government institutions, the Ministry of Works and Transport, and local leaders for their support throughout the project preparation process.
Once completed, Kidepo International Airport is expected to significantly improve access to the world-renowned Kidepo Valley National Park, one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife destinations. The facility is also expected to attract more investment into Karamoja, create employment opportunities, enhance trade, and position the region as an important hub for tourism and economic development.
The commencement of works marks the beginning of a new chapter for Karamoja, reflecting how peace, strategic planning, and strong partnerships can transform a region and unlock opportunities for future generations.
