The death of Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu has brought back memories of the 1997 killing of rally driver Gerald Kiddu, another case that shocked Kampala after an early-morning attack at a woman’s home.
Matovu, 77, died at Kibuli Hospital on September 24, 2026, after reportedly being injured during a confrontation at a woman’s residence in Kibuli. Police said a man who had previously been in a relationship with the woman was involved in the incident.
The circumstances have drawn comparisons with Kiddu’s death on May 16, 1997. Kiddu, then 40, was shot at about 2:30am at a woman friend’s home in Bunga, Kampala.
Reports said armed men followed Kiddu to the house and demanded that the door be opened. When it remained closed, they allegedly fired through the door, killing him.
Although the two cases are not directly connected, both involved attacks in the early hours of the morning at homes linked to women known to the victims.
The nature of the attacks, however, was different. Kiddu was shot by armed attackers, while Matovu reportedly sustained injuries during a physical confrontation.
Kiddu’s case also involved the arrest of the woman at whose home he was killed. Harriet Kasiimire was reportedly charged but later acquitted after spending 13 months in custody.
In Matovu’s case, the woman involved was also arrested as police investigated the circumstances surrounding the veteran musician’s death.
While Kiddu’s murder remains one of Kampala’s notable unsolved cases, investigations into Matovu’s death are still ongoing, with police working to establish exactly what happened and the responsibility of those involved.0773997444
