Security Minister and Rujumbura County NRM flag bearer, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Jim Katugugu Muhwezi, has called on residents of Rukungiri District to continue backing the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), asserting that the party remains committed to serving all Ugandans.
Muhwezi made the appeal on Tuesday while engaging voters in Masya Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub-county, as part of his campaign activities ahead of the 2026 General Elections. The minister emphasized the importance of sustained support for the NRM’s vision of development.
During his tour, Muhwezi addressed gatherings at Rwamagabo Church of Uganda, Nyabugando, Omukidandari, and Katogo trading centers. He highlighted the NRM’s track record in promoting social and economic transformation, noting that the party delivers services without discrimination.
“NRM will never betray Ugandans because its focus is on socio-economic progress for everyone,” Muhwezi told his audience. He urged residents to support President Yoweri Museveni, himself, and all other NRM flag bearers, emphasizing their ability to secure development initiatives for the constituency.
In his remarks, Muhwezi encouraged his supporters to reach out to opposition members and persuade them to consider joining the NRM, warning against being influenced by individuals lacking the capacity to deliver meaningful development.
The minister’s campaign momentum was strengthened when Mr. Fred Mpwerize Birimuye, a former competitor in the NRM primaries, publicly endorsed Muhwezi. Mpwerize urged local residents to unite behind him to ensure that promised development projects are implemented.
Elizabeth Namara, a resident of Kanyabihara Cell and previously affiliated with another aspirant, Arinitwe Frank Rukanirwa, also pledged her support for Muhwezi. She cited the need for continuity in development as a key reason for rallying behind the NRM flag bearer after the primaries.
As he continues to traverse Rujumbura County, Muhwezi has emphasized the need for unity within the party and the importance of sustaining government programs that benefit local communities.
His campaign stops have drawn large numbers of residents, who have applauded his commitment to inclusive development and praised his efforts to maintain stability and progress across the district.
With the 2026 elections approaching, Muhwezi remains focused on consolidating his support base, ensuring party cohesion, and demonstrating his capability to deliver results that will improve the lives of residents in Rukungiri.
