Opposition lawyer and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has reportedly been detained and held at Kira Road Police Station, triggering fresh political tension and public debate across Uganda.
Sources indicate Lukwago was picked up shortly after pursuing legal action linked to remarks attributed to Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The move has sparked outrage among opposition figures and members of the legal fraternity, who argue that his detention undermines the independence of lawyers and constitutional rights.
Reports further suggest he was transferred to Kira Road Police Station, where he allegedly spent the night as discussions continued over possible charges, including claims tied to an ongoing treason-related investigation. Authorities have not officially confirmed the exact charges.
Opposition voices say Lukwago was simply performing his legal duties, while government supporters insist due process must be followed without interference.
As he awaits a possible court appearance, the case is rapidly becoming a focal point in Uganda’s wider debate on civil liberties, political power, and the rule of law.
