Haba Na Haba Food Bank Uganda has unveiled its bold 1 Billion Meals Endowment Campaign, a nationwide effort aimed at providing over 1,760,000 meals to households facing food insecurity. The launch, held at St. James Bbiina Catholic Parish in Kampala, is supported by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), Food Banking Regional Network (FBRN), the Egyptian Food Bank, and the UAE government.
Jessica Bagenda, CEO of Haba Na Haba Food Bank Uganda, explained that the initiative will focus on orphanages, refugee settlements, people living with disabilities, and low-income families grappling with the rising cost of living. Each food package is intended to sustain a family of five for a month. “Since 2021, we’ve been delivering food from markets to NGOs that serve vulnerable groups, including children with autism, the elderly, orphans, and single-parent households,” Bagenda noted.
The campaign plans to distribute a total of 50,100 food boxes, with 2,550 already delivered. To further support the initiative, the organization rescues about 1,200 kg of food daily from markets, helping to close nutritional gaps for the most vulnerable communities. The overall campaign is valued at approximately USD 142,000, reflecting the scale and impact of the effort.
Representatives from the UAE Embassy in Kampala-Bujumbura highlighted that the campaign forms part of a broader humanitarian commitment to reach underserved communities throughout Uganda. “This is an act of humanity. The distribution aims to reach vulnerable populations across the country,” said Bukenya Mohammed Shaban, Chief of Protocol and Translation at the embassy.
Brand ambassador Sam Bagenda encouraged continued support for the campaign, emphasizing the profound effect of providing hope and sustenance to those in need. “There is no greater joy than helping someone regain hope. Supporting the fight against hunger is a cause we all should appreciate,” he said.
The 1 Billion Meals Campaign will extend to multiple districts, strengthening Haba Na Haba Food Bank Uganda’s efforts to reduce food waste, enhance food security, and assist communities most affected by hunger. The initiative underscores a growing national commitment to addressing food insecurity while fostering compassion and solidarity across Uganda.
