Retired General David Sejusa has revealed that he received Shs1.2 billion as his retirement package after 46 years of service in Uganda’s security services, dismissing claims that he was paid Shs10 billion.
Sejusa made the revelation on October 7, 2026, while responding to a social media user who questioned the amount he received. He said the figure included his pension and was paid as a lump sum.
The former intelligence chief challenged anyone doubting his statement to verify the records at the Ministries of Defence and Finance.
Sejusa also criticised what he described as unequal retirement benefits for military officers compared to senior civilian public servants and judges. He cited medical cover, vehicles, housing and furniture as benefits he said retired soldiers do not enjoy.
He further claimed that some senior civilian retirees and judges receive medical treatment abroad, while retired military officers lack similar support. He added that some soldiers who served alongside him for decades received even smaller retirement packages.
Sejusa officially retired from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) on August 31, 2022, during a ceremony presided over by President Yoweri Museveni at State House, Entebbe. He was among 48 generals who retired under Batch 12.
During his military career, Sejusa held several senior positions, including State Minister for Defence and Coordinator of Intelligence Services.
He joined the armed struggle that brought Museveni to power in 1986 and eventually rose to the rank of four-star general.

His retirement followed years of legal battles over his exit from the army. In 2016, the High Court awarded him Shs750 million in damages and ordered payment of salary arrears and retirement benefits, but the Court of Appeal later overturned the decision. He signed his retirement documents in May 2022, with his retirement taking effect in August.
