My name is Mariam, and I come from Entebbe. For many years, I believed I was in a relationship with a man who genuinely loved me and wanted us to have a future together. I was prepared to make sacrifices, work hard and save money so that one day we could own a beautiful home and enjoy the life we had always dreamed of.
When I got the opportunity to work in Saudi Arabia, I considered it a golden chance to improve our lives. I understood that living and working far away from home would come with challenges, but I was ready to endure the loneliness because I believed my efforts would eventually benefit both of us.Before leaving Uganda, my boyfriend and I talked about our plans for the future.
We agreed that I would travel abroad, work hard, save money and send it to him to oversee the construction of our house back home. I kept imagining the wonderful moment when I would return and finally settle into the home we had planned to build together.I had complete faith in him.
Every time I received my salary, I would reserve part of it for our construction project and send the money to him. I believed that every amount I contributed was helping us move closer to achieving our dream of owning a house. At times, I would sacrifice some of the things I wanted because I was determined to save more money for our future home.
While other people used their earnings to enjoy themselves, I kept reminding myself that my hard work had a greater purpose because I was investing in a future with the man I loved.Whenever I called him, I would ask him how the construction was progressing. He always gave me explanations about the project, and I trusted his words because I believed he was committed to the plans we had made together.
I would often picture the rooms, the kitchen and the compound of the house we hoped to call our home. Whenever work became exhausting or I felt homesick, thinking about the future house gave me the strength to continue working and making sacrifices for the life I wanted us to have.
For years, I continued working far away from Uganda, convinced that my boyfriend was taking care of the dream we had agreed to pursue together. It never crossed my mind that the money I was sending him could be used for something entirely different from the purpose I had intended. When the time finally came for me to prepare for my return to Uganda, I was filled with excitement.
I had spent years away from home, and I could not wait to see how far the construction had progressed and begin a new chapter of my life alongside the man I believed I would eventually marry.Unfortunately, my happiness was short-lived.Soon after returning to Uganda, I discovered a painful truth that completely shattered my expectations.
The man I had trusted with my hard-earned savings had allegedly used the money I sent for the construction of our house to marry another woman.I struggled to comprehend what had happened. I had spent years working in a foreign country, enduring loneliness and sacrificing my comfort because I believed we were building a future together.
Suddenly, I was confronted with the heartbreaking reality that he had used my sacrifices for a different purpose from the one we had agreed upon.I felt betrayed, humiliated and deeply heartbroken.
Remembering all the months of difficult work made the situation even more unbearable. I kept wondering how a man who had promised to build a life with me could turn around and use the money I had worked so hard to earn in a way I had never imagined.
For a long time, accepting what had happened was extremely difficult. I felt as though I had lost not only the future I had envisioned with him but also the trust I had placed in someone I genuinely believed would never intentionally cause me such pain.During that difficult period, I heard about. To read more, tap hereh
