Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has declared that he intends to run for President of Uganda in 2031, giving a firm timeline to his long-discussed political ambitions.
In a post on X on August 25, 2026, Muhoozi reportedly said he would contest for what he described as “the highest office in the land” in 2031 and expressed confidence in victory.
The declaration comes after Muhoozi chose not to challenge his father, President Yoweri Museveni, in the 2026 elections, instead backing him for another term and continuing with his military responsibilities.
Meanwhile, the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has begun renewed grassroots mobilisation following the 2026 elections. The organisation has reportedly held post-election gatherings aimed at reconnecting with supporters and rebuilding its structures across the country.
One such mobilisation meeting was held at Humura Playground in Kyegegwa District, bringing together PLU supporters and leaders from Tooro, Bunyoro, Greater Mubende and surrounding areas.
PLU has also undergone internal leadership changes as it prepares for a new phase of activities.
Muhoozi’s latest declaration now gives the movement a clear political objective, with 2031 emerging as the year around which his supporters are expected to organise.
The announcement is likely to reignite debate over Uganda’s political succession, particularly given Muhoozi’s position as President Museveni’s son and his background as a senior military officer.
For now, Muhoozi has publicly set his sights on 2031, while PLU continues rebuilding its grassroots structures ahead of what could become a major presidential contest.
