The Church of Uganda has spoken out following the circulation of a viral video showing a priest and a local leader involved in a physical confrontation during a Sunday service in Abim District. The incident occurred at All Saints Church of Uganda in Abim, North Karamoja Diocese, involving retired priest Rev. Canon Richard Ongom and a congregant identified as Innocent Oyoo, who is reportedly the LC2 chairperson in the area.
Reports indicate that the disagreement began during announcements towards the end of the service. The situation allegedly escalated into an argument before turning physical, prompting concern among members of the congregation.Abim District Police Commander SP Moses Olang said Oyoo allegedly attempted to make an announcement without first informing the priest presiding over the service.
Church communications officer Adams Sadiiki explained that people who wish to make announcements during a service are expected to seek permission from the priest in charge. The Acting Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda, Balaam Muheebwa, said the matter had been referred to the relevant Church structures to establish exactly what happened and what led to the confrontation.
Police have also opened investigations after receiving complaints from both Ongom and Oyoo, with statements reportedly taken from the two men and some witnesses. The Church of Uganda has called for calm as investigations continue. Both the Church and police are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident before any administrative, pastoral or other appropriate action is taken.
