National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has issued a stern warning to his supporters, urging anyone afraid of imprisonment to leave the political struggle. Speaking at the NUP headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, he revealed that the election period could see an increase in arrests targeting opposition figures.
Bobi Wine claimed he has received information indicating that the government plans to detain people close to him. “If you fear prison, please leave the struggle. I have information that they’re planning to arrest everyone around me,” he stated, stressing the seriousness of the situation. He urged his followers to remain fearless, emphasizing that courage and commitment are essential for the fight for political change.
The NUP leader announced that his nomination will take place on the same day as President Yoweri Museveni, scheduled for September 23. He also confirmed plans for an after-nomination rally in Katwe, coinciding with Museveni’s rally at Kololo. “Those who are scared should not come. We are in a real struggle, and there’s no room for fear,” Bobi Wine said, signaling his determination to mobilize supporters despite potential threats.
The president’s warning comes amid heightened political tensions ahead of the 2026 elections. Opposition leaders in Uganda have faced repeated arrests in recent years, and concerns are mounting that such actions could intensify as the campaign period unfolds. Bobi Wine described the period as the start of a protest vote against the current regime and called on his supporters to remain steadfast in their commitment to democracy and justice.
Security measures have been strengthened across the country, with the Special Forces Command (SFC) expected to provide protection for all presidential candidates. Analysts note that this adds to the tension and highlights the high stakes of the upcoming elections.
Bobi Wine’s message underscores the risks opposition members face in Uganda while emphasizing that fear of imprisonment should not deter individuals from participating in the political process. As the election period approaches, his call for courage and determination sets the tone for a decisive moment in Uganda’s political landscape.
