Fresh controversy has erupted in Uganda after social media reports attributed to Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba suggest that the release of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago could depend on intervention from Gen. Salim Saleh.
According to the circulating claims, Muhoozi allegedly stated that Lukwago would only be released if the request comes directly from Saleh, warning that otherwise he could “remain in jail.”
The remarks, which have not been officially verified by government or military sources, have triggered intense political debate online and among opposition supporters.
Critics argue that any decision regarding Lukwago’s detention must strictly follow court processes and constitutional procedures, warning against political interference in judicial matters.
Legal experts and civil society voices have also emphasized the importance of due process, saying criminal cases should be handled solely through established courts.
Opposition supporters view the alleged comments as evidence of growing political pressure around high-profile legal cases, while government supporters say such discussions should be understood in the context of national security concerns.
At the time of reporting, no official statement had been issued by the military or government clarifying the remarks.
