Chaos erupted at Rwengoma Beneficiation Center in Ntungamo District when a police officer allegedly went on a drunken rampage in the early hours of 7th October 2025, around 2:10 a.m., leaving residents of Nyakinombe Village shocked and terrified.
According to ASP Odong Tobia, Zonal Commander of the Mineral Police in Ankole Region, the suspect, identified as PC Ochola Joe (No. 68349) from the Field Force Unit (FFU) Rwizi Region, was on special duty targeting illegal mining and mineral smuggling at the center.
Instead of performing his duties, the officer reportedly consumed excessive alcohol, picked up his rifle (Gun No. 564810779), and proceeded to a funeral gathering in Nyakinombe Village, where he fired live bullets into the air. Witnesses said the gunfire sparked panic, forcing mourners and residents to flee for safety.
Following the shooting, PC Ochola allegedly set up an illegal roadblock and stopped a vehicle with registration number UDJ 592U, robbing the driver of 1,000 shillings. This escalated the incident into a case of attempted murder and aggravated robbery.
Police investigations confirmed that the officer fired seven bullets, although no cartridges were recovered at the scene. He was later disarmed and arrested by fellow officers before causing further harm. Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) Ntungamo documented the scene and recorded statements from witnesses.
The District Police Commander (DPC) of Ntungamo was promptly notified, and PC Ochola is now detained at Ntungamo Central Police Station while investigations continue. Authorities confirmed he will face appropriate criminal charges once inquiries are complete.
The Uganda Police Force reassured the public that such indiscipline will not be tolerated and praised the officers who acted quickly to prevent additional danger.
While residents expressed relief that order was restored, many remain shaken by the violent incident. Police continue to stress the importance of professionalism, discipline, and responsibility among officers, particularly during sensitive community operations.
