Mityana Diocese Bishop Dr. James Bukomeko has condemned the reported arrest and detention of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, insisting he will not be intimidated into silence despite rising political tensions in Uganda. The Bishop said he is deeply troubled by how Lukwago was taken into custody and warned that such actions risk dragging the country back into painful political history marked by fear and intimidation.
Speaking firmly, Bukomeko emphasized that religious leaders have a moral duty to speak out on justice and human rights, regardless of political pressure or personal risk.He added that fear should never prevent citizens and leaders from raising concerns when they believe something is wrong in society, insisting that silence would amount to betrayal of that responsibility.
The Bishop further stated that even threats would not deter him from speaking out on national issues affecting justice and accountability. His remarks come as Lukwago faces charges of misprision of treason, a case that has sparked heated national debate, with supporters calling it political persecution while government supporters insist it is a legal matter for the courts.
The intervention by Bishop Bukomeko has added to growing voices from religious and civil society leaders calling for transparency, due process, and respect for human rights in handling politically sensitive cases.
