He stated that most of the people criticizing him lacked proper understanding, adding that many “didn’t see enough blackboards,” a phrase he used to refer to their limited knowledge about HIV.
He explained that these attacks only show how much misinformation still exists. Kats emphasized that ignorance is one of the biggest reasons why people with HIV face unnecessary stigma, even when science has made great progress in treatment and prevention.
In his response, Kats reminded the public that a person living with HIV can stay in a relationship without infecting their partner. He stressed that with the right medication and adherence to treatment, the virus can become undetectable, meaning it cannot be transmitted to anyone else.
This message aligns with the widely accepted global medical principle known as U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable). Health experts have been spreading this information for years to help the public understand that HIV is no longer a death sentence or a barrier to a normal life.
Kats said he believes many Ugandans still hold outdated beliefs about the virus, which is why they easily judge people who are open about their status. He encouraged the public to seek correct information instead of attacking those who speak honestly.
Despite the harsh criticism, he stated that he is not bothered by the comments. Kats said that at this point in his life, he has learned not to care about opinions that are rooted in ignorance and negativity.
He also pointed out that as someone who has chosen to live openly and educate others, he expects resistance. According to him, those who spread misinformation often do so because they have never taken time to understand the truth.
