Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has issued a strong warning to civilians over public discussions concerning military affairs. In a social media post, Muhoozi advised members of the public to stay away from commenting on or discussing matters involving the military.
“Civilians are highly advised NEVER to comment on or discuss military affairs. This is for their own good,” Muhoozi stated in the message, without identifying a specific group of civilians or particular military issue that prompted the warning.
The statement comes as military-related issues continue to attract significant attention on social media, with Ugandans frequently discussing the conduct of serving officers, military uniforms, operations and other developments involving the Uganda People’s Defence Forces. Recent comments by senior military officials have also generated widespread online debate.Muhoozi’s warning followed his remarks concerning the recent controversy surrounding generals seen wearing a red ceremonial uniform.
He said he had not approved the uniform and stated that more arrests would follow in connection with the matter, according to reports quoting his social media posts.However, the CDF did not explain what specific military information civilians should avoid discussing, nor did he state what consequences, if any, could follow for people who ignore his warning. His wording, particularly the phrase “for their own good,” has itself become a subject of discussion online.
