The Jinja Road Police have reported a tragic road traffic crash involving a passenger train and a motor vehicle that resulted in the death of one person and left three others injured. The incident occurred on Friday, December 19th, 2025, at approximately 5:25 PM at the Wankoko Railway Crossing along Spring Road, within the jurisdiction of Jinja Road Police.
According to preliminary details, the crash took place when a passenger train, traveling from Kampala towards Mukono, collided with a Mitsubishi Pajero motor vehicle, registration number UBF 582X. The motor vehicle, which was coming from the Luzira side and heading towards Kampala, was struck by the train. The force of the impact pushed the motor vehicle around 200 meters off the road.
The vehicle was carrying four occupants, all of whom were United States citizens working for an NGO known as Baptism Mission in Uganda. The victims included Gardener Mathew (a male adult), Savana Gardener (a female adult), and two children. Following the collision, the victims were rushed to Rubis Hospital along the Lugogo Bypass for treatment. Sadly, Savana Gardener, who was the co-driver, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the crash may have been caused by careless driving and a failure to heed hand signals issued by a Railway Police officer on duty at the crossing at the time. These findings remain tentative, pending further investigation.
The scene of the crash was inspected and documented by Railway Police officers, and statements are being taken from witnesses. The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and are working to confirm the exact cause of the incident.
In the meantime, the Uganda Police Force has extended its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and wishes a speedy recovery to those who were injured.
