A prosecution witness in Dr Kizza Besigye’s treason trial has told the High Court in Kampala that discussions allegedly involved attempts to bring National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, into a plan to remove President Yoweri Museveni’s government.Andrew Wilson Orlando, a private security investigator, claimed that he suggested involving Kyagulanyi in meetings with Besigye and Joel Wakayima, but alleged that Besigye rejected the idea, saying Bobi Wine was still inexperienced in politics.
Orlando told court that Besigye allegedly claimed to have already established links with senior military officers in Uganda and other countries who could support the alleged plan. The witness further alleged that the discussions involved weapons, military training and attempts to remove Museveni from power, with the group allegedly considering blaming the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) to avoid public backlash.Orlando also claimed that some supporters were being prepared for alleged military training in Kisumu, Kenya, but the plans were disrupted following arrests and security interventions.
He told court that he gathered information by presenting himself as a potential supporter who could provide resources to the group. However, the allegations remain claims by the prosecution and have not been proven in court. Besigye has denied accusations that he planned to overthrow the government through violent means. The trial continues before the High Court, with the defence expected to respond to the prosecution’s evidence.
