Juliet Nyonyintono, the wife of late Ugandan theatre icon Alex Mukulu, has revealed that she regrets leaving their marriage years ago following what she described as minor misunderstandings.Speaking at Mukulu’s requiem mass at the National Theatre, Juliet said disagreements arose after they had their two children in the early 1990s, eventually prompting her to leave their home in Mengo.
She later travelled abroad and spent years away from Uganda, while Mukulu remained in his Mengo home. Juliet said she eventually returned after learning that his health had deteriorated.According to her, Mukulu did not remarry during their 34 years apart, something that made her reflect on their relationship and the bond they had shared.
Juliet said she had the opportunity to speak to Mukulu before his death and asked him to forgive her for leaving him.“I regret leaving him after a small misunderstanding, but before he died I asked him to forgive me,” she said. She described Mukulu as a special and dedicated person whose contribution to Uganda’s theatre and entertainment industry would not be forgotten.Family, friends and fellow actors gathered to honour the legendary performer, remembering him for his creativity, humour and lasting influence on Uganda’s theatre industry.
