Ugandans and supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) have marked the first-ever “National Bobi Wine Day”, an initiative launched by supporters of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine. The event was held on Sunday, September 6, 2026, with supporters wearing red T-shirts bearing Kyagulanyi’s image, playing his music and sharing messages and photos online.
Organizers say the initiative will be observed every first Sunday of the month to celebrate Kyagulanyi’s political journey and maintain solidarity among his supporters.Activities were reported at NUP headquarters in Makerere-Kavule and in several parts of the country. NUP leaders and supporters, including MPs Francis Zaake, Kiruluuta Yusuf Nkeretanyi and Abubakr Kawalya, encouraged followers to participate.Musicians and public figures supportive of Kyagulanyi’s political cause, including Nina Roz and King Saha, also joined the campaign.
The first observance comes as Kyagulanyi remains outside Uganda months after leaving the country following the January 15 presidential election. In August, he told French newspaper Le Monde that he considered himself an opposition leader in exile and cited security concerns over his delayed return.Despite his absence, Kyagulanyi has continued political engagements abroad, while his supporters say the monthly event will help keep his movement active and maintain public attention on his political cause.
