Uganda and the Republic of Korea have announced plans to hold a high-level investment summit in early 2026, aimed at strengthening bilateral economic ties. The event, which will be organised in partnership with the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), is expected to serve as a platform for increased collaboration between the two countries.
The announcement came after a productive bilateral meeting between Mr. Vincent Bagiire Waiswa, Uganda’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Gi-Hyun Kim, Vice President of the International Cooperation Group at KITA. The meeting, held on November 3, 2025, at the Trade Tower in Seoul, was centered on discussions to deepen economic cooperation and explore new investment opportunities.
Mr. Bagiire highlighted the strong and friendly relations between Uganda and South Korea, emphasizing the need for increased technology transfer and investment, particularly in Uganda’s key sectors. He identified Agro-industrialisation, Tourism, Mineral Development, and Science, Technology, and Innovation (ATMS) as strategic areas where both nations could benefit from enhanced collaboration.
Mr. Gi-Hyun Kim expressed KITA’s full support for the proposed Uganda–Korea Investment Meeting and assured the Ugandan delegation of his organisation’s commitment to making the summit a success. He also stressed the importance of thorough preparation by Uganda’s business community to ensure meaningful engagement with South Korean investors.
In addition, KITA officials urged the Government of Uganda to consider establishing a resident embassy in South Korea, a move they believe would help strengthen investor confidence and further enhance bilateral relations.
Accompanying Mr. Bagiire were Uganda’s non-resident Ambassador to South Korea, H.E. Ms. Tophace Kaahwa, Minister-Counsellor Mr. Nurh Byarufu, and Counsellor Ms. Evelyn Ngalonsa.
The investment summit is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing Uganda’s economic agenda and forging deeper ties with South Korea in the areas of trade, technology, and innovation.
