A daring daylight robbery in Kampala has sent shockwaves through the business community after an armed gang on boda bodas targeted a bank client in a bold and highly coordinated attack. The incident has raised fresh concerns about urban security and the increasing sophistication of criminal networks.
The robbery occurred on Thursday at the Centenary Bank Nkrumah Road Branch, one of the busiest banking locations in the city. The victim had reportedly just arrived to conduct a financial transaction when he was ambushed at the entrance.
According to police reports, the attackers were part of a well-organized gang moving on approximately 10 motorcycles, commonly referred to as boda bodas. Their numbers and coordination allowed them to execute the robbery swiftly and escape within minutes.
The victim was carrying two bags believed to contain a significant amount of cash. Authorities have not disclosed the exact amount stolen, but sources suggest it was substantial enough to attract the attention of the criminal group.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic and frightening scene as the armed gang descended on the unsuspecting victim. The attackers, some wielding machetes, reportedly surrounded him and forcefully grabbed one of the bags.
The speed and precision of the operation left little room for resistance. Within moments, the gang had secured the loot and sped off in different directions, making it difficult for immediate pursuit.

Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred at around midday. She described it as a targeted attack carried out by unidentified individuals.
“The victim was reportedly attacked at the bank entrance by a group of robbers riding approximately 10 motorcycles, who made off with an unspecified amount of money,” Kawala said in an official statement.
Security agencies have since launched an intensive manhunt for the suspects. The operation involves multiple units, including crime intelligence teams, the Flying Squad Unit, and CCTV analysts working together to track down the perpetrators.
Authorities are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the bank and surrounding areas in an effort to identify the attackers and trace their escape routes. Investigators believe the gang may have conducted prior surveillance before executing the robbery.
The incident has heightened anxiety among residents and business owners in Kampala’s central business district. Many are questioning how such a large-scale robbery could occur in broad daylight in a heavily populated area.
Security experts note that boda boda gangs have increasingly been used in urban robberies due to their speed, maneuverability, and ability to blend into normal city traffic. This makes them particularly difficult to track once they flee a crime scene.
The robbery comes at a time when police have intensified operations against criminal networks across the Kampala Metropolitan Area. Despite these efforts, incidents like this suggest that some gangs remain active and emboldened.

According to security officials, many individuals involved in such crimes are repeat offenders. Some are said to have recently been released on bail or completed prison sentences, only to return to criminal activity.
In recent months, police have arrested more than 1,000 suspects in anti-crime operations throughout the city. Many of these individuals are currently on remand as authorities attempt to dismantle organized crime groups.
Community leaders have called for stronger preventive measures, including increased police patrols, improved intelligence gathering, and closer cooperation between banks and security agencies.
There are also renewed calls for financial institutions to enhance security protocols, particularly when handling large cash transactions. Suggestions include discreet client handling, armed escorts, and better coordination with law enforcement.
Residents have expressed concern about their personal safety, noting that if such an attack can happen outside a major bank in daylight, ordinary citizens may also be at risk.
Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that could assist in the ongoing investigation. They have also advised individuals handling large sums of money to take extra precautions.
As the manhunt continues, authorities remain hopeful that the perpetrators will be apprehended and brought to justice. The incident stands as a stark reminder of the evolving nature of urban crime and the need for constant vigilance in rapidly growing cities like Kampala.
