Veteran journalist and political commentator Andrew Mwenda has stirred public debate after claiming that Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago could be released on bail on Monday.
Mwenda alleged that he spoke to Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who reportedly indicated he would not oppose Lukwago’s bail application when it is presented in court.
According to Mwenda, this development could pave the way for Lukwago’s possible release when the matter comes before the court.
Lukwago, a prominent opposition figure, was recently arrested and charged with misprision of treason, a case that has triggered widespread political debate and public attention.
His detention has been heavily discussed in political and legal circles, with supporters insisting the charges are politically driven, while government supporters maintain that the matter should be handled strictly through judicial processes.
Mwenda’s remarks have circulated widely online, drawing mixed reactions from the public, with some welcoming the possibility of bail and others warning against relying on unofficial statements.
Legal observers have also emphasized that only the court can determine the outcome of the bail application, regardless of political discussions or personal assurances.
As the country awaits Monday’s court proceedings, attention remains fixed on whether Lukwago will indeed be granted bail, as suggested in Mwenda’s comments.
No official confirmation has yet been issued by the court or prosecution regarding the reported position on the bail application.
