A fresh controversy has emerged after Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba claimed that Uganda had cancelled its contract with Turkish construction firm Yapi Merkezi Holdings for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project.
In a statement shared on social media, Muhoozi said the government had terminated the agreement and would seek a “more worthy” company to undertake the multi-billion-dollar railway project.
His remarks quickly sparked debate, with many Ugandans questioning whether such a major decision had been officially approved. The SGR project is one of Uganda’s biggest infrastructure plans and has been strongly backed by President Yoweri Museveni and the Ministry of Works and Transport.
However, no official government communication had, by the time of Muhoozi’s statement, confirmed the cancellation of the Turkish contractor. The comments have now raised uncertainty about the future of the railway project, with calls growing for the government to clarify the status of the contract and the next steps for the long-awaited development.
