Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has declared that the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) will stage a demonstration at the Turkish Embassy in Kampala on September 1 over the continued stay of Ugandan government critic Fred Kajubi Lumbuye in Turkey.Muhoozi, who chairs PLU and serves as Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, said the demonstration will take place “in force” and without fail, adding that all concerned parties have been notified.“PLU shall demonstrate at the Turkish embassy in force on the 1st of September without fail! All concerned have been notified,” Muhoozi stated.
The planned protest follows Muhoozi’s repeated calls for Turkish authorities to hand over Lumbuye to Uganda, where the government has raised concerns over his online activities and criticism of President Yoweri Museveni’s administration.Lumbuye has for years been a prominent government critic, with his social media commentary attracting both strong support and condemnation.
The planned demonstration could put renewed attention on Uganda-Turkey relations, diplomatic protocol and the handling of Ugandan nationals involved in politically sensitive cases abroad.Turkish authorities have not publicly responded to Muhoozi’s latest announcement.Muhoozi, however, maintains that PLU will proceed with the protest on September 1.
