Former Assistant Inspector General of Police Asan Kasingye has hit back at FUFA President Moses Magogo in a heated debate over the marketing, management and development of Ugandan football. The exchange followed reports that Vipers SC sold midfielder Allan Okello for Shs4.4 billion, with Kasingye questioning why Uganda has not secured more lucrative deals for its talented players.“We need to learn how to market our players in Uganda. Football is a multi-business venture but we’re on 1% battery power,” Kasingye said.Magogo countered that local football also suffers because many Ugandans devote more attention to foreign leagues than domestic competitions.
He later challenged Kasingye to a televised debate.Kasingye responded sharply: “You want to debate me on TV? Really? Am I now worthy of your audience?”He recalled their 2022 disagreement, claiming he was denied an opportunity to respond publicly to Magogo’s statements.Kasingye also dismissed suggestions that he was targeting the FUFA presidency, saying, “You think I am interested in your chair? Forget it. Listen to our views.”
He defended Ugandans who support foreign clubs while also following local teams, arguing that supporting Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool or Chelsea does not make someone an enemy of Ugandan football.Kasingye said a televised debate would give him an opportunity to question issues surrounding football administration, commercialisation, player transfers and accountability. He insisted that the biggest problems facing local football are not fans supporting foreign clubs, but weaknesses in the management of the game.“The enemies of Ugandan local football are not those who support Arsenal, ManU, Liverpool or Chelsea. They are those who run Ugandan football,” Kasingye said.
