In an unprecedented scene of chaos and intense emotion, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Uganda Police found themselves in a fierce battle to save a murder suspect who had butchered four innocent children in the Gaba area of Kampala.
The horrific crime, which took place at the Gaba Early Childhood Day Care Centre, sent shockwaves across the nation, but what followed was a fierce confrontation between law enforcement and an angry mob bent on exacting their own form of justice.
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Christopher Okello Onyum, had reportedly gone to the daycare centre, posed as a parent, and, after some time, committed the brutal murder of four toddlers aged between one and a half to two and a half years old. The children were all enrolled at the Gaba centre. Reports indicate that Onyum had planned the attack in advance, even purchasing sharp knives and preparing for the violent act.
The kids – Ryan Odeke, Keisha Otim, Gideon Oteko, and Ignatius Sseruyange – were attacked and killed in a vicious manner that left the entire nation reeling with disbelief.
The brutality of the killings triggered swift reactions from the local community, who quickly gathered outside the daycare, armed with an intense urge for revenge. The news of the murders spread like wildfire, and within moments, hundreds of enraged residents gathered at the scene.
Angry and vengeful, the mob was determined to administer their own form of justice to Onyum, who had already been captured by bystanders.
As the police and UPDF arrived on the scene, the mob had already taken matters into their own hands. They had set up burning tires, a clear indication of their intention to burn Onyum alive.

The mob, consumed by grief and anger, was shouting for the death of the murderer. They demanded immediate retribution for the crime that had so brutally robbed the community of their innocent children.
Realizing the severity of the situation, both UPDF and Uganda Police officers acted quickly to prevent the mob from carrying out their deadly plan. Police officers and soldiers formed a protective circle around Onyum, pushing back the angry crowd. Despite the heavy presence of law enforcement, the mob was relentless, throwing insults and even attempting to break through the security cordon.
The officers and soldiers, facing pressure from both the emotional anger of the public and the dangerous mob, stood their ground, determined to protect the suspect from being burned alive.
“We understand the pain and anger the community is feeling, but we cannot allow a situation where mob justice takes precedence over the rule of law,” one police officer at the scene stated. “We will do everything in our power to ensure that justice is served in the right way.”
The mob’s fury was palpable, as they hurled stones and debris at the police and UPDF personnel, screaming for the blood of the man responsible for the senseless murders.
They were undeterred by the presence of law enforcement and seemed determined to finish what they had started. Despite this, the security forces held firm, using their presence and tactics to subdue the crowd.
During the confrontation, some members of the mob even attempted to light the tires they had set up, but the police and UPDF officers quickly intervened, using fire extinguishers and making strategic moves to prevent the situation from escalating further. Tensions were incredibly high, and it became evident that the authorities had to act swiftly to prevent a larger tragedy from unfolding.
Meanwhile, Onyum, who had been tied up by the mob, appeared to be in shock. He showed no signs of resistance as he was transferred into police custody. The police and soldiers, despite their best efforts, had to wrestle the suspect away from the crowd, who were continuing to shout for his execution. The scene was chaotic, with people shouting, crying, and demanding justice for the innocent children who had lost their lives in the most horrific manner.
A senior police officer explained the situation, saying, “We know that the community is grieving, but we cannot allow this to become an environment where justice is meted out by the mob. We must ensure that due process is followed, and the law takes its course.” The officer added that it was crucial for the authorities to protect the suspect until he could face a proper investigation and trial for his actions.
As the security forces managed to control the mob and remove Onyum from the scene, there was a noticeable sense of relief among the police and army personnel. However, the situation was far from over. With the suspect now in custody, the focus shifted to ensuring that he was safely transported to a more secure location where he could be questioned, and proper legal proceedings could begin.

Later reports confirmed that Onyum was taken to a nearby police station under heavy guard. Authorities said that the investigation into the crime was underway, and he would be charged with multiple counts of murder.
It was also revealed that Onyum had a troubled past, with prior involvement in violent acts, which made the community’s anger all the more intense. He was previously implicated in the death of a family member, a crime that had been reportedly linked to a mental health condition, though police were working to verify these details.
As news of the intervention spread, many in the community expressed mixed feelings. Some residents appreciated the police and UPDF for their role in preventing the mob from carrying out the brutal act, acknowledging the importance of due process. However, others felt that the authorities had failed to respond sooner, believing that justice should have been swift for a crime as horrific as this one.
The incident also raised broader questions about the prevalence of mob justice in Uganda, particularly in cases involving heinous crimes. While it is understandable that communities may feel a strong urge for revenge, human rights activists warn that mob justice often leads to further violence and undermines the integrity of the legal system. They argue that such situations only highlight the need for better policing, faster judicial processes, and more public education on the importance of the rule of law.
As investigations continue, the community remains in shock, trying to come to terms with the brutal loss of four innocent children. In the aftermath, the authorities are expected to carry out further interrogations, and it remains to be seen whether Onyum will face additional charges, given the complexity of the situation.
For now, the focus is on ensuring that the victims’ families receive support and counseling, and that justice is served through the proper legal channels.
The authorities have promised that the full extent of Onyum’s actions will be uncovered, and appropriate legal measures will be taken. The tragic events in Gaba have left a deep scar on the community, and many are calling for a deeper examination of the issues surrounding mob justice and the safety of children in their communities.
