The Ministry of Health has raised alarm over reports that some food vendors in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, are allegedly adding Panadol tablets to beans and meat to make them cook faster.
The concern was revealed by Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwine during National Cleaning Day activities in Kyaliwajjala, where she interacted with residents and inspected food and sanitation conditions.
Dr Atwine said some women preparing food for restaurants told her they use Panadol to reduce cooking time, warning that the practice could expose consumers to uncontrolled amounts of medicine.
She explained that Panadol contains paracetamol, which can cause serious liver damage when taken in excessive quantities. The health official also warned against using substances known locally as “kavela” in cooking, saying chemicals added to food can pose serious health risks.

Dr Atwine further condemned the burning of plastic waste near food preparation areas, warning that toxic smoke from burning plastics can harm people and the environment.
She urged restaurant owners, food vendors and households to observe proper food safety and sanitation standards, while encouraging residents to participate in monthly National Cleaning Day activities.
Her remarks have sparked concern among members of the public, with calls for increased inspection of restaurants and stronger enforcement of food safety regulations.
