Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced that former Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among will be released from house arrest following instructions from President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.Muhoozi revealed the development through his social media platforms, saying his father had directed him to lift the restrictions placed on Among.
“My father has instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well,” he stated, referring to Among by her initials. The announcement comes after Among spent more than three months under house arrest without appearing in court over allegations that had been linked to her. Her troubles reportedly began shortly after the presidential inauguration and parliamentary swearing-in events in May, when security agencies started investigations involving her properties.
Security personnel reportedly searched several of Among’s residences and seized vehicles and other items as investigations focused on allegations related to wealth and financial impropriety. Among the items that attracted public attention was a Rolls-Royce reportedly valued at about Shs3.4 billion.Despite the investigations, no public prosecution against the former Speaker had been announced, leaving questions over the next steps in the matter.
The Inspectorate of Government was reportedly provided with information concerning the allegations, but the legal process remained unclear. The latest development could mark a significant shift in Among’s political future. She remains the Woman Member of Parliament for Bukedea and could potentially return to active political engagement after the end of her restrictions. The announcement has sparked fresh debate over the handling of investigations involving senior political figures, with many awaiting further clarification from government institutions on the status of the investigations and the property reportedly seized during the security operations
