Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has reportedly been released from house arrest after President Yoweri Museveni allegedly directed that she should not face charges over corruption-related allegations. The development follows weeks of political and security pressure on Among, whose political fortunes appeared to change dramatically after the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) withdrew its reported support for her return as Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
Security agencies reportedly searched several properties linked to Among in Kampala and Bukedea, including residences in Nakasero, Kololo and Kigo. Reports claimed that vehicles, electronic devices, documents and cash in different currencies were seized during the operations. Her troubles also coincided with reports that evidence concerning allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment and money laundering had been submitted to the Inspectorate of Government.Several former parliamentary officials were subsequently arrested and charged in corruption-related cases, although the allegations remain subject to court determination. The latest twist came when Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba reportedly said on social media that President Museveni had directed him to release Among from house arrest.
He further stated that the President had forgiven the former Speaker and that she would not be charged over the alleged offences. If confirmed, the decision would represent a major turnaround for Among, who had recently faced intense political scrutiny and appeared to have lost her position at the centre of national politics. The development has already triggered debate over the handling of corruption allegations involving senior political figures and what will happen to property and evidence reportedly collected during the investigations.Among’s next political move is now being closely watched, with questions remaining over whether she will return to the centre of Uganda’s political scene or remain away from the spotlight.
