A fresh political controversy has erupted after Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba reportedly claimed that opposition lawyer and Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago had been detained and that he personally ordered his release.
In a widely shared social media post, Muhoozi allegedly said he decided to free Lukwago after being persuaded by his wife, Charlotte, stating that he acted out of love for her. The remarks quickly triggered debate, with critics questioning why the release of a detained citizen would depend on personal influence rather than legal procedures.
The comments come amid concerns over reports that Lukwago had been picked up by security operatives under unclear circumstances. Legal groups, including the Uganda Law Society, condemned the reported detention and demanded transparency, arguing that Lukwago was carrying out his professional duties as an advocate.
Opposition leaders and human rights activists have called for authorities to explain whether Lukwago was detained, under what legal grounds, and who authorized his release. The incident has reignited debate about the rule of law, political freedoms, and the treatment of opposition figures in Uganda.
