Reports have emerged claiming that opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, quietly left Uganda about a week ago.
The development comes at a time of rising political tension and uncertainty surrounding his security situation.
According to information circulating among political sources, Kyagulanyi is believed to have crossed into a neighbouring East African country.
However, there has been no official confirmation from him or his party about his exact location.
The reported departure follows days of anxiety after Bobi Wine announced that he had gone into hiding on January 16.
He said he feared for his life after what he described as a military raid on his home in Magere, Wakiso District.
Kyagulanyi claimed that armed security personnel stormed his residence, searched the premises, and created an atmosphere of fear for his family. He said the situation forced him to disappear from public view for his own safety.

Since going into hiding, Bobi Wine has continued to release statements through social media. In those messages, he has repeatedly alleged that state agencies are targeting him and trying to intimidate him politically.
Government officials, however, have strongly rejected these claims. They maintain that Bobi Wine is not being pursued by any security organ and that he is free to move and carry out his activities within the law.
The Minister for Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance, Chris Baryomunsi, publicly stated that Kyagulanyi is not a wanted man. He emphasized that no police, military, or intelligence unit has been ordered to track him down.
Baryomunsi further urged the opposition leader to return home and stop hiding. He said other former presidential candidates are living peacefully in Uganda and participating in national life without fear.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja also spoke out, describing Bobi Wine’s decision to go into hiding as unnecessary. She suggested that his actions were politically motivated and meant to draw public sympathy.
Despite the government’s reassurances, Bobi Wine’s supporters remain worried. Many of them believe his concerns about security threats are real, pointing to past incidents where opposition figures have faced arrests or confrontations with security forces.
The National Unity Platform (NUP), the party he leads, has largely kept silent about his whereabouts. Party officials have avoided confirming whether he has indeed left the country.
Bobi Wine’s political journey has often been marked by tension with the authorities. As a former presidential candidate, he has been a strong critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s long rule and has frequently spoken about human rights and democratic reforms.
He contested the January 15 presidential election but lost to Museveni. Kyagulanyi rejected the results, alleging vote rigging, intimidation of voters, and irregularities in the electoral process.

After the election, tensions between opposition supporters and security forces remained high in several parts of the country. This background has added weight to the fears expressed by Bobi Wine about his personal safety.
Kyagulanyi also claimed that during the alleged raid on his home, his wife, Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi, was assaulted. These allegations were denied by senior military officials, who said the army does not target women.
The reported news of his departure has sparked strong reactions online and offline. Supporters say leaving the country could have been a necessary step to protect his life, while critics argue it weakens the opposition’s presence at home.
Political analysts note that leaders sometimes leave their countries temporarily during tense periods. They say such moves can be strategic, either for safety or to gain international attention.
Still, the lack of clear information has fueled speculation. Without official confirmation from Kyagulanyi himself, many questions remain about where he is and what his next political move will be.
For now, Uganda’s political atmosphere remains tense. The situation surrounding Bobi Wine’s reported exit adds another layer of uncertainty to an already charged environment.
As citizens await clarity, both government statements and opposition claims continue to shape the national conversation. Whether Bobi Wine returns soon or remains away for longer, his absence is already being felt in Uganda’s political scene.
