Soroti University is preparing for a landmark event as it gets ready to hold its very first graduation ceremony on Saturday, 13th December 2025, six years after welcoming its inaugural class in 2019. Located in Arapai, Soroti District, this milestone marks a significant achievement for higher education in eastern Uganda, signaling the university’s growing role in shaping skilled professionals for the region.
The public institution, with a strong focus on science and technology, will celebrate the achievements of 118 graduates across its three flagship programs. This graduation is a culmination of years of rigorous academic work and practical training, reflecting the university’s commitment to producing highly competent graduates who can contribute meaningfully to Uganda’s development.
According to the university spokesperson, Juma Hazan Yene, the ceremony will honor 53 students completing the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, 43 students graduating with Bachelor of Nursing Sciences, and 22 graduates receiving Bachelor of Engineering degrees in Computer and Electronic Engineering. He emphasized the significance of these programs in building a robust scientific and technical workforce for the country.
“This graduation represents the determination, resilience, and dedication of both our students and faculty. It is a proud moment not just for Soroti University but for the entire region,” Yene said, highlighting the importance of nurturing local talent in applied sciences and healthcare.
The event will be graced by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, though he may be represented by Vice President H.E. Rtd Maj Jessica Rose Alupo Epel due to the President’s ongoing campaign engagements in the Bunyoro subregion. The presence of national leaders underscores the ceremony’s significance and the government’s support for advancing higher education in Uganda.
The day will also carry emotional weight as the university honors the late Polycap Odukatum Okiror, one of its pioneering medical students who passed away in August this year. University officials and fellow students are expected to pay tribute to Okiror’s memory, celebrating his contributions to the university community despite his untimely death.
Established in 2015 as Uganda’s ninth public university, Soroti University was designed to strengthen training in applied sciences, engineering, and health disciplines, particularly for the underserved eastern and northeastern regions. Its curriculum emphasizes hands-on, practical learning, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for both national and international professional environments.
As the university prepares for its historic event, it continues to pursue its vision of becoming a hub for scientific innovation in line with Uganda’s Vision 2040. The upcoming graduation ceremony is more than a celebration of academic achievement—it is a testament to Soroti University’s growing influence in shaping the future of science, technology, and healthcare in the country.
