The Electoral Commission of Uganda has started notifying presidential aspirants about the status of their supporter lists, a critical step ahead of the 2025 elections. As of Friday, 19th September 2025, 27 of the 38 aspirants who submitted their lists have been updated. Of those notified, only two have met the legally required minimum number of supporters, while the others are still in the process of meeting compliance. Verification of the remaining submissions is ongoing, with notifications to follow once the process concludes.
Under Section 10 (3) of the Presidential Elections Act, every aspirant must submit a list of registered voters endorsing their candidacy. Each supporter is required to provide their name, signature, physical address, and voter registration number. Candidates must secure at least 100 supporters in two-thirds of Uganda’s districts, totaling a minimum of 9,800 supporters, ensuring that only those with broad national backing can contest the presidency.
The Commission emphasizes that its verification process is rigorous to guarantee adherence to the law. Section 10 (4) prohibits any individual from supporting more than one candidate, with violators facing legal consequences. Under Section 10 (5), offenders may be fined up to UGX 480,000, imprisoned for up to one year, or both.
Julius Mucunguzi, the Commission’s spokesperson, underscored the importance of complying with electoral regulations. He reassured both aspirants and the public that the nomination process for presidential and other elective positions will be conducted transparently and in full accordance with the law. Notifications on supporter lists allow candidates to resolve any issues before the formal nomination period.
Presidential nominations are scheduled for 23rd and 24th September 2025 at the Electoral Commission offices in Lweza-Lubowa, Makindye Ssaaabagaabo. Aspirants are urged to finalize all requirements ahead of these dates to avoid disqualification, as the nation closely monitors the unfolding race to the State House.
