Ugandans have expressed concern after veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye was reportedly taken back to hospital following a deterioration in his health.
Besigye was reportedly transferred from Luzira Prison to the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) after his condition worsened. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, said he remains weak and is struggling with basic activities, including walking, speaking, writing and holding objects.
“Should he first die before they realise that he was indeed very sick?” concerned Ugandans asked in reaction to the development.
Byanyima has renewed her appeal for authorities to allow Besigye to travel to Geneva, Switzerland, for specialised medical treatment while surrounded by his family.
Besigye’s health concerns have persisted since he reportedly collapsed during his treason case at the High Court in Kampala. He was later admitted to Mulago National Referral Hospital before being returned to Luzira after his condition improved.
His family has maintained that he requires specialised medical attention outside prison, while his supporters continue calling for urgent care.
Besigye is facing treason charges alongside Hajji Obeid Lutale and Captain Denis Oola, with prosecutors accusing them of plotting to overthrow the government.
His latest hospitalisation has once again triggered debate over his health, access to medical care and the future of his ongoing court case.
