National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has backed former UN diplomat Olara Otunnu’s bid to become the next United Nations secretary-general.Bobi Wine described Otunnu as a respected Ugandan diplomat with decades of experience in human rights, peacebuilding and international affairs.
He praised Otunnu’s global service and said his campaign represents an opportunity for Uganda to present a strong candidate on the world stage. However, Kyagulanyi also recalled Otunnu’s failed UN secretary-general bid in 1996, accusing the Museveni government of denying him endorsement at the time.“We cannot forget the historical injustice when the Museveni regime denied him an endorsement for this very position years ago,” Bobi Wine said. The remarks come after the government endorsed Otunnu’s current bid, despite past political disagreements between him and President Yoweri Museveni.Otunnu, who previously served as UN under-secretary-general for Children and Armed Conflict, is among candidates seeking to replace António Guterres when his term ends in 2026.
