Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has said that matters concerning opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye will be handled by Gen Salim Saleh, claiming President Yoweri Museveni has given him the authority to deal with the matter.
Gen Muhoozi made the remarks while commenting on Besigye’s political and legal situation.
“Kizza Besigye will be handled by Afande Saleh. If he wants forgiveness, he should talk to Afande Saleh. Mzee has given Afande SS those powers,” Muhoozi said.
The statement has attracted attention given Gen Saleh’s influential role in Uganda’s political and security affairs and his close relationship with President Museveni.
Besigye, a long-time government critic and former presidential candidate, has had a decades-long political relationship with Museveni, having initially worked with the NRM before becoming one of its strongest opponents.
Muhoozi’s remarks have renewed debate about the possibility of reconciliation between Besigye and the government, as well as the role of Gen Saleh in resolving political disputes.
