Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has said opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye will be “handled” by Gen Caleb Akandwanaho, commonly known as Salim Saleh, claiming President Yoweri Museveni has given him the authority to deal with the matter.
“Dr. KB will be handled by Afande Saleh,” Muhoozi reportedly said, adding that Besigye should approach Saleh if he wants forgiveness.
“If he wants forgiveness he should talk to Afande Saleh,” Muhoozi said.
He further stated: “Mzee has given Afande SS those powers,” referring to President Museveni as “Mzee” and Saleh as “Afande SS.”
The remarks have put Salim Saleh at the centre of renewed speculation over Besigye’s political and legal situation, particularly regarding the possibility of reconciliation or forgiveness.
Besigye has for decades been one of Museveni’s most prominent political opponents, facing repeated arrests, court cases and detention during his long-running opposition to the government.
Muhoozi did not explain what specific powers Saleh had been given or what he meant by “handling” Besigye. It remains unclear whether the matter concerns political negotiations, security issues, forgiveness or another arrangement.
The statement is nevertheless likely to attract significant attention as political observers await possible responses from Besigye, Saleh or the government.
