A political storm has erupted in Uganda following remarks attributed to Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in which he allegedly linked the arrest of opposition figure Erias Lukwago to what he called a wider “rectification campaign” targeting “traitors.”
In the statements circulating online, Muhoozi suggested that Lukwago’s arrest is only the beginning of a broader crackdown, warning that more arrests could follow as part of efforts to “purify Uganda.”
The remarks have sparked intense debate across the country, with critics arguing that they signal a worrying escalation in political rhetoric and could heighten tensions between government-aligned figures and the opposition.
Lukwago, a former Kampala Lord Mayor and prominent opposition voice, was recently arrested and charged with misprision of treason, a case that has already drawn widespread condemnation from opposition leaders and human rights advocates who claim it is politically motivated.
Opposition supporters say the latest comments deepen concerns about shrinking political space, while legal analysts stress that all criminal proceedings must follow due process through the courts without political interference.
Supporters of Muhoozi, however, defend his stance as a strong message on law and order, arguing that anyone suspected of wrongdoing should face investigation and accountability under the law.
The remarks have since gone viral on social media, fueling divided reactions and renewed debate about Uganda’s political direction, the role of security institutions, and the handling of dissenting voices.
Authorities have not issued an official clarification on the statements, while Lukwago remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.
