At 81, Joseph Aheto, a Ghanaian entrepreneur, has proven that age is not a barrier to achieving dreams. His inspiring journey reached a remarkable milestone in December 2025 when he graduated with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise Development from the University of Cape Coast (UCC). What made this achievement even more heartwarming was the fact that the graduation ceremony was presided over by his son, Professor Denis Aheto, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university.
The sight of his son conferring his degree added a deeply emotional touch to the event. Mr. Aheto, reflecting on the moment, expressed his joy: “I feel very much excited to have my own son graduating me today,” he shared with pride. For him, this was not just a personal achievement, but also a moment to honor the values of education and perseverance.
This was not Mr. Aheto’s first academic triumph. He had already earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Ghana back in 1978. However, years of experience in the business world did not stop him from returning to education. In fact, his decision to pursue an MBA came years after his two sons had already built impressive academic careers as professors.
Rather than being daunted by his sons’ accomplishments, Mr. Aheto drew inspiration from them. He spoke candidly about his decision to return to the classroom: “I realized my children were academically ahead of me, and I decided to go back to school,” he admitted. This sense of motivation, rather than competition, spurred him to further his education, a decision that would set the stage for a new chapter in his life.
Mr. Aheto’s return to school in 2022 was a bold move, especially given his age. Enrolling in the MBA program was a significant step, but it also came with challenges. Some younger classmates doubted his decision, and Mr. Aheto was occasionally met with mockery and skepticism. Yet, despite these challenges, he remained resolute, focused on his goal, and determined to prove that learning has no age limit.
“I faced some skepticism from my younger classmates, but I did not let that discourage me. I soldiered on and now I have graduated,” he said, reflecting on his determination to overcome the barriers that stood before him. His journey was not only about academic success, but also about proving that lifelong learning is possible for anyone, at any stage of life.
The significance of Mr. Aheto’s achievement extends beyond just his personal success. It sends a powerful message to people of all ages, showing that it is never too late to pursue one’s educational aspirations. His story has inspired many, especially those who may feel that age or circumstances are obstacles to furthering their education.
Mr. Aheto’s achievement is a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief that the pursuit of knowledge should never stop, no matter how old one gets. His success is a shining example that learning is not limited to a certain age, and that with determination and passion, anyone can break through the barriers to achieve greatness.
