Mathias Walukagga, aspiring Member of Parliament for Busiro East, has announced that he will reject the Shs200 million government provides MPs to buy new vehicles. Instead, he plans to use most of the money to support his constituents, particularly women running small-scale businesses.
“I have enough cars already; I won’t waste Shs200 million on another one when my people are struggling,” Walukagga said. He highlighted his record as the Nsangi Town Council mayor, where he gave the official car to tax collectors and a motorcycle to his aide rather than keeping them for personal use.
The singer-turned-politician said he cannot enjoy government luxuries from the system he wants to change, especially under President Museveni’s government, whom he hopes to challenge in the upcoming elections. Walukagga revealed that Shs120 million of the 200 million will be invested in women’s SACCOs across four town councils—Kyengera, Mende, Mumyuka, and Wakiso. These SACCOs will provide loans and support for women running businesses such as selling tea or roasting maize.
“I’ll invest Shs120 million into women’s SACCOs to help hardworking women grow their businesses,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to community empowerment. Observers note that while many politicians make similar promises, few deliver, so Walukagga’s pledge will be closely watched by his constituents.
He will face off against the current MP, Hon. Medard Lubega Ssegona, who lost the NUP nomination to him. The race is expected to be competitive, with residents excited about the prospect of public funds being used to help local women rather than personal luxury.
Walukagga’s pledge reflects his broader vision of being a people-focused leader who tackles socio-economic challenges and uplifts communities. If successful, his actions could set a new standard for politicians, encouraging them to use public funds for community development instead of personal gain.
